Did You Know? Fun Facts: Wimbledon Version

Wimbledon is filled with such an amazing history and is truly one of the best sporting events of the year to attend live. 

Known as the oldest tennis tournament in the world, with the very first championship taking place in 1877 with only 200 spectators in attendance. Talk about history and growth!! The ticket price might have increased from one shilling each for the final match, but we still have amazing and affordable packages to choose from!!

Wimbledon is still the only major to be played on an all grass court and remains the greatest and most prestigious tournament of all. During a match, breakfast or exploring London, you will have the honor of seeing Royalty and celebrities from all over the world in attendance. 

One of our most favorite of fun facts is all about the tennis balls at Wimbledon! Between the 256 players and 254 matches, there is a huge need for a lot of balls…

Facts about tennis balls

• Balls are changed out after the first seven games and then each subsequent ninth game
• In 2019 54,250 balls were used during the championship matches 
• 24 cans of balls per day for each outside court AND 48 cans per day for Centre Court and Court No. 1 are actively used
• Balls that are not in play are stored in a refrigerated container to keep them in the best condition 
• In 1986 balls were changed from white to yellow to make them more visible to TV cameras and global viewers

Strawberries and Cream Dream

Nothing says summer in England more than the Wimbledon tennis championship and famous strawberries and cream! Enjoy strawberries and cream and afternoon tea, with access to the Wimbledon Debenture Lounge Club, the only club on the Wimbledon grounds, when you secure travel with Mac Sports Travel. 

Trust us, you cannot leave Wimbledon without trying the strawberries and cream. This is a staple at Wimbledon and your group will not be disappointed. 28,000 kg of strawberries and 10,000 liters of cream are consumed during Wimbledon, with over 140,000 bowls of strawberries and cream being enjoyed and dished out for the spectators and players.

But did you know that all the fruit comes from one farm in Kent? Every morning before dawn, two teams of 40 pickers arrive at the farm to pick over 100,000 strawberries for one day’s consumption – so fresh and a must-try!!
